Prepare Your Garden Space
The first step is to get rid of any weeds and brush from the areas where you’re going to place your beach pebbles. Make sure to remove the roots of the weeds and any other plants you’re taking out so they won’t grow under your pebbles after you place them.
Put landscape fabric or a weed mat over the area where your beach pebbles will be placed to minimize weed growth and keep soil from mixing with your beach pebbles. You can buy weed mats at any gardening or landscaping store, and they’re made of various materials. While plastic weed mats are common, consider using an environmentally friendly biodegradable type that will decompose over time.
You also need to make sure your garden has adequate drainage so water doesn’t build up around your Mexican beach pebbles. If you do notice an accumulation of water when it rains, one option is to create a French drain next to your garden. This is a trench filled with gravel that allows excess water to drain away from the garden. You can improve drainage even more by burying a pipe in the trench that directs runoff water to an area that doesn’t flood during periods of heavy rain.
Place Your Beach Pebbles
Once your outdoor space is prepared, you’re ready to move your bags of beach pebbles to the garden area and begin placing them. Start by opening the bags and carefully shaking or spilling the beach pebbles out. If you’re creating a design with different types of pebbles (such as a contrasting pattern using black and snow-white pebbles), it’s best to spill them out in small amounts and arrange them in your preferred pattern as you go.
Using a garden rake, spread the beach pebbles so they completely cover the space. You shouldn’t be able to see the weed mat underneath, so you may need to layer the beach pebbles. Spread the beach pebbles evenly, and try to get them as level as possible. When you’re working around flowers and plants, arrange your beach pebbles by hand to avoid damaging the flora.
Finally, take a step back and assess your work. Make sure the colors go well with your plants and any sharp angles or lines in your design are straight. Make any necessary adjustments, fill in the spots that need more coverage, and get ready to enjoy your gorgeous new outdoor space!
