Prepare the Yard
Before beginning any other steps, always prepare for the leveling process to discover the severity of unevenness. That helps you determine how much intervention is necessary and what level of effort you’ll need to put forward. Creating a leveling chart on paper with sketches can help you outline the high and low points, drawing attention to the more significant areas of the space that need leveling.
Keep in mind an uneven lawn negatively affects the functionality of your landscaping. For instance, it will be difficult to mow the lawn and plant flowers and trees, it can cause pest and weed infestations, or it could limit the yard’s usability, whether for family gatherings or fun activities with the kids.
Mow & Clear the Space
If the debris isn’t removed from the grass, you’ll be unable to level the lawn. Remember the low spots when taking on the mowing process so you can come back and examine them later.
If you prefer not to mow the backyard, cut out a patch of the turf where small holes or areas of depression exist. Doing so allows you to place a patch of healthy grass or even a layer of snow-white pebbles to level the depressions without exposing the soil.
Create a Soil Mix
Grass, plants, and other features of the yard will need to keep their airflow and different nutrients, which is exactly what soil can help the plants do. However, the most important aspect of topsoil is to stabilize uneven surfaces and prevent future settling.
Use pure sand when creating the soil mix, along with dry topsoil. Always use straight edges when paving to secure a smooth surface. After you’ve applied the soil to the lawn, use a tamper or yard roller to compact the soil in a gentle manner, which allows you to obtain the best leveling results.
Water the Lawn
Watering can help the soil settle and show you how level your lawn truly is. If the yard looks unlevel, resurface it. To do this, you can add more topsoil and shift some of the mixture around.
After watering the lawn, look for more low spots. If they exist, you can add beach pebbles and decorative rocks, such as polished black river rock, to fill those areas. These stones can be a perfect equalizer to improve the damp and soft areas. To learn more, speak to a rock supplier who can give you some tips and steps to avoid.
